Put water out for them in a bird bath- they need fresh water to drink that has not turned to ice so break the ice when it is there. Do the same to ponds. Put out seeds and nuts along with fat balls- they will bring flocks to your garden- keep on feeding them, for if they come and there is no food there, they will have wasted all that energy getting to your garden in vain, and will not come again for a while usually. So check every day- you'd be surprised how quickly the food goes. Put seeds on the flor to for shy birds such as black birds and sometimes starlings.
